April 5, 2007 (HOUSTON, TX)…This past weekend, more than 300 national and international sporting clays shooters converged on American Shooting Centers, located in George Bush Park, in Houston for the annual Browning/Briley World Sporting Clays Open Championships. Competitive shooters from nearly all 50 states, as well as other countries, participated in several sporting clays target events.

Wendell Cherry won the Main Event and was crowned as the new High Overall (HOA) champion and Ashley Hafley was crowned as the HOA Lady champion on Sunday night at Browning/Briley Hall at ASC. In addition to a trophy, custom made rings by Hinz Jewelers were presented to both by Willie Hinz. Wendell Cherry took home a cash prize of $2500. More than $50,000 total in cash, prizes and trophies were awarded to those placing in several events.

“The participant turnout was larger than in prior years and that made for a more exciting event than ever before,” said Mo Parsons, president and COO of ASC. “It was incredible to see so many skilled marksmen from all around the world in one place and we intend to keep building on that momentum going forward.”

The winners of the other events included:

  • Keith Moore of Houston, Texas won the 100 Target Sporting Prelim

  • Jon Kruger of Laurenceburg, Indiana won the 100 Target FITASC (an international sport shooting federation) Championship

  • Anthony Matarese of Pennsville, New Jersey won the 100 Target NSCA (National Sporting Clays Association) 5-Stand

  • Bode Porter of San Angelo, Texas won the Side by Side event

  • Bode Porter of San Angelo, Texas also won HOA in the 50 Target Briley small shotgun gauge events

American Shooting Centers plays host to approximately 140 major corporate and charity events throughout the year – both small gatherings for company team building or client development programs, very large programs for corporate special events, charity events for organizations such as the Museum of Fine Arts, MD Anderson Hospital, etc. and competitive contests. ASC coordinates an annual fundraising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has raised a total of more than $1.7 million for the charity.
